Recommended Hiking Trails Bend, Oregon
Deschutes River South Canyon Trail - This is a 3.1-mile easy loop hike located just outside of town and, on average, takes 1 hour to complete. An excellent place for hiking, biking, and trail running. The best times to use the trail are usually around May through November. Dogs are welcome and can be off leash in some areas.
Pilot Butte - This is a 1.8-mile out and back trail that allows dogs but they must be on a leash. The trail is open year-round and is a great visit any time. Once on top of the butte, there are views of all the Oregon Cascades and the surrounding high desert.
Tumalo Falls via Tumalo Creek Trail - This is a 6.4-mile out and back hike that is a popular hiking and mountain biking trail in the Deschutes National Forest. Starting from the Skyliners trailhead parking lot, it leads to incredible views of Tumalo Falls. Well maintained, this trail, on average, takes two and a half hours to complete.
Tumalo Mountain Trail - This is a 4-mile out and back hiking trail with an elevation gain of 1,423 ft. One of the best views in Central Oregon that is easy to access.
Sparks Lake Trail - This is a 19.5-mile in and out hike with a 1,591 ft elevation gain. The best time to hike this trail is April thru September, based on the weather. Dogs are welcome on the path but need to be on a leash. This hike is also excellent for bird watching and mountain biking.
Bend Glacier & No Name Lake - This is a 13.3-mile challenging out and back hike that gains 2,657 ft in elevation and requires a limited entry permit before entering. Visit the Forest Service page for more information on the permits needed. We also recommend a high clearance vehicle just to reach the trailhead. The hike itself takes on average six and a half hours to complete.
Mount Bachelor Trail - This is a 6.5-mile in and out hike and is only available when the ski resort is not in operation. Hikers must start the hike to Mount Bachelor at the West Village base area, at the base of the Pine Marten lift. You will gain 2,742ft of elevation throughout the hike.
South Sister Trails - This is an 11.6-mile out and back hike with a 4,986 ft elevation gain. You will need to obtain a day-use or overnight permit as the average time it takes to complete the trail is almost 9 hours. See the Forest Service page for more information.
